Hey, team! It snowed. And not just a little bit — quite a bit! So, what’s the best way to embrace the snow day? Big, bold red wines (and maybe a snowball fight if you're lucky enough to have neighbors who are up for it). Whether you're stuck at home or planning a future ski trip, I've got you covered with some standout wines that will make you forget about the cold. Let’s dive in!
Let’s start with a little sparkle, shall we? When it’s snowing, a beautiful rosé sounds like just what you need, and Cruse Wine Co. delivers. This Sparkling Valdiguié is made from old-vine Valdiguié grapes sourced from Rancho Chimiles in Napa Valley. Valdiguié is a red grape from Southern France (often called Napa Gamay) and Cruse makes it pop with a sparkling rosé that’s light and delicious. Michael Cruse is a young winemaker you should definitely know. If you haven’t tried this yet, you're in for a treat.
Next up, let’s talk about a Napa Valley classic. Robert Sinskey’s SLD (Stags Leap District) Cabernet Sauvignon is what you want to drink when you’re ready to settle in and relax. The wine is rich with complex flavors like dark fruit, leather, and forest floor (yes, forest floor — it’s a thing). Unfortunately, the 2017 vintage marks the last harvest from their original vineyard before it was hit by the fire, so this one is pretty special. But, fear not, you can still grab a bottle of the 2017 on their website while supplies last.
Paradigm is one of those Napa Valley wineries that oozes history and quality. The Harris family has been farming in Napa since the 1890s, and they’ve been making incredible wines from their Oakville vineyard ever since. If you’re looking for something with a little age on it, their 2015, 2016, and 2017 Cabernet Sauvignons are already perfectly cellared and ready to go. No need to wait, just pop the cork and enjoy. These wines are well-structured and full of rich, ripe fruit flavors — perfect for sipping while the snow falls outside.
Now, let’s head over to Sonoma for a legend in the making: Pax Mahle. Known for some of the best Syrah in California, the 2021 Sonoma-Hillsides Syrah is a must-try. Made from organically farmed Syrah grown on steep, rocky hillsides, this wine delivers bold dark fruit flavors with a hint of pink and white pepper. It’s balanced, powerful, and all-around delicious. If you’re into Syrah, this is a bottle that will elevate your snowed-in experience.
Alright, if wine’s not your thing, I’ve got something else up my sleeve: Henry McKenna 10 Year Old Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon. This bourbon has made quite the comeback, and for good reason. It used to be easy to find at a reasonable price, but now it’s more elusive — and a bit pricier — thanks to its newfound fame. But it’s worth the hunt. Bottled-in-bond means it’s been aged for at least four years and bottled at 100 proof under U.S. government supervision, which guarantees a high-quality drink. It’s rich, smooth, and perfect for sipping in front of a fire while you watch the snow pile up outside.
If you’re wondering what “Bottled-in-Bond” means, here’s a quick breakdown. The Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897 was introduced to ensure the quality of distilled beverages. Back in the day, it was hard to know what was actually in your bottle, and the Act helped establish regulations for aging and proof standards. To earn the label, the liquor must be distilled at one distillery, during one season, and aged for at least four years. These regulations still apply today, although many distilleries choose not to follow them anymore. Henry McKenna? They still do it, and it’s a big part of what makes it so great.
So, whether you’re hunkered down at home or planning your next snowy adventure, these wines and spirits should definitely be on your radar. Keep warm, stay safe, and drink up! Now, what’s next? You tell me!
