Houston’s finding its calm—one fold at a time. Once a quiet corner of Evelyn’s Park, the Family Fold series has turned paper into connection, using the ancient Japanese art of origami to bring people together and bridge cultures.
Here’s how Houston’s paperfolding pastime is making culture hands-on:
Family Fold – Bellaire
Hosted by the Japan-America Society of Houston (JASH), this free monthly event happens every second Saturday. The group sets up tables of colorful paper, markers, & good vibes—inviting beginners, pros, and curious park-goers to learn the folds that tell Japan’s story. Themes rotate monthly, often tied to Japanese holidays. Last month’s? Respect for the Aged Day, featuring wise owls, steady turtles, and graceful cranes.
Culture Meets Creativity
Lately, JASH has added a Houston twist—merging U.S. holidays with Japanese ones. October’s session? Halloween origami: ghost, witch hat, and jack-o’-lantern folds, all while learning how both cultures celebrate the spooky season. “We can teach Japanese culture and correlate American culture as well,” says Mai Oashi, JASH’s outreach coordinator.
Why Origami Works
No experience needed—just a square sheet of paper and a bit of curiosity. Volunteers float between tables showing tricks to get cranes to flap or turtles to glide. Participants range from toddlers to retirees, all finding a meditative rhythm in the folds. As Oashi puts it, “Origami is traditional play.”
Beyond the Park
JASH takes origami on the road too—into schools, libraries, even senior centers—spreading art & cultural understanding across Houston. Wherever they go, the message stays the same: creativity connects us.
In a city known for its hustle, Family Fold is Houston’s monthly reminder to slow down, create, & connect. One paper crane at a time, Houston’s folding more than just paper—it’s folding cultures, generations, and hearts together.
