More Space, Less Money

Pasadena Tops Houston Area for Spacious Apartments on a Budget

For renters looking for more space without stretching their budgets, Pasadena may be one of the best options in the Houston area. A new study finds that the east Houston suburb offers the largest apartments in the region for a monthly budget of $1,500.

In 2026, renters in Pasadena can expect to get an apartment averaging about 1,125 square feet for $1,500 per month. That amount of space could comfortably accommodate a two- or three-bedroom apartment and is slightly larger than what renters could find for the same price last year.

The annual study examined apartment sizes in 200 of the most populous U.S. cities to determine where renters can get the most space for a $1,500 monthly budget. The analysis used average rents and apartment sizes from multifamily properties with at least 50 units to calculate the amount of space available for the price.

Pasadena ranks sixth among Texas cities for the largest apartments available at the $1,500 price point. Houston itself comes in at No. 11 statewide, with renters able to find an average apartment of approximately 976 square feet for the same monthly budget.

Houston’s figure also reflects a gradual decline in apartment size. The average space available for $1,500 has fallen by more than 20 square feet since 2023, indicating that renters are receiving slightly less space for their money than they did a few years ago.

The Rio Grande Valley continues to offer some of the best value for renters seeking larger apartments. For the second consecutive year, the region produced the most spacious options in Texas for a $1,500 monthly budget.

McAllen leads the nation, offering an average apartment size of approximately 1,378 square feet for that price. That is enough room for a typical three- or even four-bedroom apartment.

The study notes that McAllen remains particularly attractive because average rents are relatively affordable. With typical apartment rents around $993 and an average unit size of about 912 square feet, renters can generally get considerably more space for their money than in many other parts of the country.

However, even McAllen has seen some tightening. The average apartment size available for $1,500 has dropped from approximately 1,393 square feet last year to 1,378 square feet in 2026.

Brownsville, located about an hour east of McAllen, also ranks among Texas’ most affordable cities for space. Renters there can expect an average apartment of roughly 1,213 square feet for $1,500 per month.

Top Texas Cities for $1,500 Apartments

The 10 Texas cities offering the largest average apartments for a $1,500 monthly budget in 2026 are:

  1. McAllen — 1,378 square feet

  2. Amarillo — 1,237 square feet

  3. Lubbock — 1,217 square feet

  4. Brownsville — 1,213 square feet

  5. El Paso — 1,128 square feet

  6. Pasadena — 1,125 square feet

  7. Corpus Christi — 1,115 square feet

  8. Killeen — 1,058 square feet

  9. San Antonio — 1,023 square feet

  10. Mesquite — 988 square feet

For Houston-area renters trying to maximize space while keeping monthly housing costs around $1,500, Pasadena stands out as a particularly attractive choice. Meanwhile, cities such as McAllen, Amarillo, Lubbock, and Brownsville demonstrate that renters outside Texas’ largest metropolitan areas can often find significantly more living space for the same monthly budget.
