H-Town Pets, Priceless Love

June 4, 2025

Houstonians hoping to welcome a new dog or cat into their lives this June have a unique opportunity to do so at a significantly reduced cost. The Houston Humane Society is hosting a month-long "name your price" adoption event, allowing adopters to pay what they can for adult pets.

“Love has no price tag, and neither should the joy of having a pet,” the organization said in a statement.

Typically, adoption fees range from $50 to $195. However, throughout June, all adoptions for dogs and cats aged one year or older will be pay-what-you-can. Prices for puppies and kittens will remain unchanged. Each adoption includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, microchipping, nail trimming, and grooming services.

Texas continues to face a serious homeless pet crisis, with the highest number of shelter animal euthanasias in the country—35% more than California, despite the latter’s larger population. Currently, the Houston Humane Society is caring for more than 500 animals, including 100 dogs, 46 cats, and six rabbits. Of those, 150 are available for adoption, with 31 considered long-term shelter residents. The goal of the event is to help find homes for those animals in particular.

While this initiative offers an affordable path to pet ownership for many families, the Humane Society still relies heavily on adoption fees and donations to sustain its work. In 2024 alone, the organization distributed over 800,000 pet meals, performed more than 11,000 spay/neuter procedures, and provided veterinary care to more than 28,000 animals. Last year, they successfully placed 2,500 animals in new homes.

For 67 years, the Houston Humane Society has been a key player in reducing the city’s homeless pet population. They regularly organize community-focused events such as fun runs, chili cook-offs, and the popular Yappy Easter celebration. They are also the only shelter in the region offering low-cost veterinary services to the public.
