Keeping Houston’s Art Alive

Houston’s downtown park isn’t just a green escape—it’s been a living gallery. But one year after launching Art Lab, Discovery Green’s beloved mentorship program for public artists, the future of Houston’s most colorful incubator hangs in the balance.

Here’s how the program made waves—and what’s at stake:

🌈 Chroma Collective – Karen Navarro
A mirrored wave rises where kids splash and ducks drift. Navarro’s Chroma Collective reflects Houston itself—diverse, collaborative, ever-changing. Visitors flip panels to mix portraits from all walks of life, creating new faces and new meaning. “It’s like a river,” Navarro says, “where the current takes all of us to the same place.”

🎓 The Art Lab Experiment
Launched in 2024, Art Lab paired world-renowned artist Jen Lewin with local talents Navarro and Gerardo Rosales. The duo learned how to design, pitch & build large-scale works—with a $4,500 stipend and mentorship that opened doors far beyond Houston. The result? Over 261,000 visitors experienced Chroma Collective since its debut in September.

💸 The Funding Crossroads
Here’s the catch: the anonymous donor who seeded $550K for year one wants to see local sponsors step in for year two. Without new funding, Houston could lose its homegrown art incubator—a program proven to launch new voices and boost the local economy through jobs, fabrication, and design.

🌍 Beyond the Park
Lewin’s earlier ATLAS sculpture reached 550,000+ visitors, proving Houston’s appetite for public art runs deep. For Lott and the Discovery Green team, the mission goes beyond installations—it’s about mentorship, access, and community identity. “Public art reaches everyone,” Navarro says. “It’s where people connect.”

💫 What’s Next
Even if Art Lab pauses, Discovery Green isn’t slowing down. Expect more public art, free family events & calls to action for local patrons to keep the creative current flowing. If Houston rallies, future Art Lab classes could support more than two artists at a time—amplifying voices from every corner of the city.

Art Lab already proved what’s possible when mentorship meets imagination. Now it’s Houston’s turn to keep the momentum alive.
